Closset PolyAl: giving new life to Tetra Brik waste through circular design

At Canussa, we believe in going beyond sustainable fashion. We believe in a future where waste is no longer seen as the end of a product's life but the beginning of a new purpose. Our commitment to circularity continues to shape our design philosophy, and one of the most powerful examples of this is the Closset PolyAl.

This article showcases a special edition of our Closset accessory: the Closset PolyAl. This unique version is crafted from recycled beverage carton materials, known as PolyAl, and was developed in collaboration with Tetra Pak and CM Plastik. Not a new release, but a distinctive variation of our classic Closset Canussa, the PolyAl edition is made not from our own production waste (as it is the case with the original Closset) but from the plastic and aluminum waste from beverage carton packaging.

This is more than just a sustainable product. The Closset PolyAl reflects innovation, determination, and a belief that even the most overlooked materials can be reimagined into something stylish, durable, and highly functional.

What is Closset PolyAl?

PolyAl is the name given to the combination of polyethylene and aluminum layers that remain after paper fibers are separated from used Tetra Brick containers. Often difficult to recycle and typically dismissed as waste, PolyAl is both strong and lightweight: qualities that make it ideal for reengineering into new forms. It’s this potential that inspired us to take action.

We got to work, collaborating across sectors and experimenting with techniques to transform PolyAl into a material suitable for use in our products. The result is the Closset PolyAl, a durable, elegant, and minimalist accessory that serves not only a practical function but also tells a compelling story.

The Closset PolyAl project transformed this material into a functional, resilient, and aesthetically appealing product, reinforcing the message that there is no such thing as waste, only misused resources.

This initiative has highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration and creativity in sustainable product design. It has also brought to light the potential of PolyAl as a valuable material within the circular economy, opening new avenues for its reuse across various industries.

Projects like Closset PolyAl demonstrate that it is possible to scale innovative solutions when vision, design, and collaboration come together. They also generate economic value and support local employment, contributing to a more resilient and inclusive society.

The circular economy model showcased in projects like Closset PolyAl is applicable to many sectors and can inspire other industries to rethink the value of recycled materials. Progress is only possible when we unite across sectors and explore new solutions with creativity and commitment.

From waste to design

When most people think of beverage cartons like Tetra Brik, they see a single-use product. While the paper components is often recyclable, the plastic and aluminum layers (previously mentioned that it is known as PolyAl) are notoriously difficult to reuse. That did not stop us from asking a powerful question: is it possible to give a second life to these components from the beverage carton packaging?

Many said no. But we saw an opportunity in the challenge. Through dedicated research, testing, and collaboration with material innovators and recyclers, we found a way to transform PolyAl into a strong, lightweight material — one that became the foundation for the Closset Polyal.

This functional and durable design piece proves that waste is only waste if we fail to see its potential. The Closset PolyAl not only helps organize your day-to-day life; it also tells a story of creativity, commitment, and circular design. Because giving materials a second life is just the beginning, the real transformation happens when we start rethinking what waste truly means.

Versatility with a purpose

Just like the original Closset Canussa, the PolyAl edition is a highly versatile accessory. It functions as a bag hook, a backpack hook, or a locker; keeping your bags off the floor and within reach wherever you are. Minimalist, urban, and designed with purpose, the Closset Polyal offers both style and functionality.

Each Closset PolyAl is unique, shaped by the distinct appearance and textural characteristics of the recycled PolyAl used in its creation. These subtle variations make every piece a one-of-a-kind example of how uniqueness and sustainability can go hand in hand.
